Colombia
Piendamó, Cauca
Exelso Gran Galope is a washed single origin coffee from the Cauca region of Colombia. It is grown at an altitude of 1400 to 2000 metres above sea level. Cauca is located in the centre-west of Colombia and stretches from the western Cordillera (mountain range) to the Pacific Ocean. The sea winds and altitude make Cauca one of the coolest regions in Colombia. The coffee from each lot in this area comes from 10-30 small farmers and can be traced back to the region. It is mainly grown by indigenous or Afro-indigenous communities and is one of the poorest regions in Colombia. Excelso refers to the size and quality of the beans (more on this below). This coffee comes from our partner Cafe Imports, who work closely with the coffee farmers and co-operatives. This close relationship not only guarantees the high quality of the coffee, but also promotes a sustainable and supportive local partnership.
Variety & process
100% Arabica
Caturra and Castillo
Process: Washed

Caturra was discovered on a plantation in Brazil between 1915 and 1918 and is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety. Today, it is one of the most economically important coffee varieties in Central America and is often used as a ‘benchmark’ against which new varieties are tested. Castillo is descended from Caturra. It is a very typical variety for Colombia and has been very widespread there since 2008 thanks to a government-sponsored program. It is considered resistant to leaf rust.

EXCELSO
Our first espresso from the Gran Galope program from our partner Café Imports is here. Intense sweetness of cherries, characterful cocoa notes and hints of red apple. A multi-layered firework of flavours awaits you on the palate in this espresso. The washed coffee comes from smallholder farmers in the Cauca region of Colombia. All in all, an espresso to melt in your mouth. Super silky, sweet and not at all bitter – perfect for any time of year.
What is Excelso coffee?
Excelso is a classification for Colombian Arabica coffee (not to be confused with the Excelsa variety, almost only Arabica is grown in Colombia). It relates to the size and quality of the beans. Excelso is one quality level lower compared to the larger Supremo beans. It is characterised by a milder texture with more acidity. Excelso beans are characterised by the fact that they fall through sieves of size 20, 19, 18, 17 and 16. They remain in size 15 and 14 sieves. If the beans are larger than size 15 sieves, they are considered supremo. If they are smaller than size 14 sieves, they are categorised as UGQ (‘Usual Good Quality’).

Sustainable cultivation and quality awareness
As with wine, the origin, cultivation and careful harvesting of coffee form the basis for a speciality coffee. We only use ripe and hand-picked 100% Arabica coffee beans for our coffees, as the painstaking manual harvest is an essential quality criterion. Our highland coffees are natural products and are grown in shady forest gardens in an environmentally friendly way. This preserves the biodiversity of the growing region. The coffee cherries can ripen slowly at cool altitudes with nourishing and fertile soil conditions. Under these optimal climatic conditions near the equator, the coffee plants have more time to develop their characteristic and fruity flavours.
Freshly roasted by hand
All Röststätte coffees are gently roasted by hand in Berlin so that the natural flavours can fully develop without any unwanted acidity. For a distinctive body and a versatile flavour profile in the cup, we want to emphasise and optimally process the special features of the respective variety, farm and origin of the coffee with our roasting. The aim is therefore to exploit the full potential of the green coffee through our roasting method in order to emphasise the valuable work of the producers in the countries where the coffee is grown. These are our quality principles – from source to the final cup.
