5 reasons for compostable coffee capsules
Our specialty coffees are now available as a Nespresso capsule alternative for the capsule machine at home and in the office.
The innovative wooden capsule is a sustainable alternative to aluminum coffee capsules. They are made of wood fibers without the use of fossil plastics or microplastics. The wood fibers are obtained without chemical processing as a residual product of the wood industry and come from sustainable PEFC certified forestry in southern Germany. We show you 5 good reasons why it makes sense to try our compostable coffee capsules.
Our best espresso blends in capsule
You can now enjoy our most popular espresso roasts Sinfonia and Novum at the touch of a button with the Nespresso system. We have put together three different varieties for you. The Sinfonia is available as
classic Espresso or
Lungo, the
Novum as Ristretto (the slightly shorter version of the espresso) and our
Swiss-Water decaffeinated Decaf can also be drunk as espresso or lungo. Specialty coffee in the compostable coffee capsule. In cooperation with rezemo we make this possible.
1. Specialty coffees from gentle roasting
The type of roasting is a decisive quality feature of coffee. We roast our coffees by hand in our roastery in Berlin-Mitte using the artisanal drum roasting process on a Loring S35 Kestrel, one of the most modern and at the same time most energy-friendly roasting machines on the market. The process is much gentler than industrially roasted coffees, which are often used for conventional coffee capsules. The gentle roasting process is crucial so that we can optimally bring out the individual character of our coffees.
2. Regional production
Consisting of natural wood fibers with the addition of lactic acid, the innovative wood capsules are made from completely renewable raw materials. The wood fibers are obtained from residues of sustainable, PEFC certified forestry in southern Germany. The coffees are roasted by us in Berlin and also filled into the capsules in Germany.
3. Sustainable material
Our Nespresso capsules alternative is the innovative wooden capsule and this has a significantly better environmental balance. Compared to the aluminum capsule, even at least 55% of CO2 emissions are saved. The climate-neutral disposal makes it possible, especially because the wood fibers absorb water and thus promote rapid decomposition.
4. Compostability
In industrial composting plants, the capsules are not perceived as a disturbing material and are therefore not usually sorted out. Even in home composting, the homogeneous distribution of the wood fibers in the material and, in turn, their hydrophilic effect leads to rapid moisture penetration of the capsule body. This visibly breaks the material matrix after a very short time – so the capsule can be rubbed between the fingers after only a short time in the appropriate environment. The wood fibers decompose naturally – the lactic acid is certified according to DIN EN 13432 with regard to compostability.
5. No microplastic
The release of microplastics can be completely ruled out, as no fossil raw materials are included from the outset – as evidenced by the 100% bio-based certification. Our packaging is also made entirely of recycled cardboard and is therefore particularly environmentally friendly.
